Although I'll never admit to having this whole skincare thing figured out, I do love sharing personal favorite products that work wonders for my combination, breakout-prone and all-around unpredictable skin.

Eau Roma Water by Lush | I purchased this toner on a whim one day when I was shopping in Lush and realized that there is something oh-so-cool and spa-like about spray-on facial toners (am I the only one?!). Let me tell you how happy I am about this impulse buy... I absolutely love spritzing this on in the morning, evening and anytime in between. The rose and lavender provide calmness to the skin, along with a lovely, light scent and a hint of moisture. I've turned into a loyal buyer for life.

Simple Replenishing Rich Moisturizer | To those with oily skin, do not be turned off by this "rich" moisturizer. I find the formula to be super lightweight but incredibly hydrating in a barely there way. I also love that it doesn't contain harsh chemicals, perfumes or dyes.

Tea Tree Oil by The Body Shop | I must admit, I was a skeptic about this product at first. However, over the past few months, I've noticed the cleansing tea tree oil has helped fade my acne scars and quickly heal any breakouts. Bonus: this teeny bottle has lasted me around 6 months with everyday use. #worthit.

Catastrophe Cosmetic fresh face mask by Lush | This mask was a recommendation from a reader [thanks Nicole!] and needless to say, I already purchased my second pot of it. The blueberry and chamomile in this product calms redness, moisturizes, is super gentle, and smells divine. Check, check, check check.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, I'm still loyal to the Camomile Cleansing Oil from The Body Shop as well!

playing tourist in my own city: hotel monaco

There are few things I love more than exploring old and new places in the city that I call home, Pittsburgh, Pa. I like to think of it as playing tourist in my own city. A few weeks ago, some co-workers and I headed downtown for a networking event at the newly-opened Hotel Monaco. I was in awe of the super-chic, colorful and quirky decor, as proven by my three Instagram posts that night. [Isn't there an unsaid rule against that or something?] This is not your cookie-cutter, run-of-the-mill hotel; it had a very uniquely grand feel.

The colorful floral chandelier was so perfectly perched above the hotel lobby. Is this fixture to die for or what? I pretty much need one for my apartment, even though something tells me it wouldn't quite fit. Also, take a peek at the tufted yellow couch in the background. Swoon.

I had to take a photo of this book, because obviously. As you can tell, no detail was overlooked in the lounge areas. Beautiful artwork on the walls, gorgeous patterned rugs, and coffee table styling. This was a form of heaven for me.

We decided to ride the elevator to the top floor, in search of the penthouse suite. The geometric carpet mixed with floral wallpaper in the hotel halls were perfect. The added pop of color on the doors had me sold! Even the bathrooms were gorgeous, and I don't think I've ever called a bathroom pretty before.

Much to our surprise, we actually did get a peek at the penthouse suite [we think]. Because this was the week of the hotel's soft opening, some items weren't fully complete yet - like the knobs on the double doors of a room at the end of the hallway. Naturally we looked through the hole and snuck a few pictures, and I dreamed of one day staying there.

There were countless other areas that I wanted to photograph, but I didn't want to look like too much of an overly-excited tourist. If you decide to go, I promise you won't be disappointed. Needless to say, I will be paying Hotel Monaco another visit in the near future. I am dying to go to brunch or happy hour at the hotel's restaurant, The Commoner, so be sure to keep a look out for that post in the future!

anatomy of a valentine's day bar

Recently, I've become more than obsessed with bar cart styling. In an effort to replicate the perfect bar carts I've seen on Pinterest and on my favorite blogs, I went on a mission to purchase and style my own little bar.

bar | KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA | I wasn't able to find an actual bar cart that was in my price range, so I decided on this little shelving unit from IKEA. It was a very reasonable price and can be repurposed if I ever get tired of the "bar" set up (which isn't likely, but just in case!).

bottles | What's a bar without your favorite libations? Whether you're celebrating v-day with a significant other or friends, be sure to add your favorite beverage to your at-home stash. I'm usually a white wine drinker, but those bottles are in the fridge. The Absolut vodka bottle on the left is a special edition Andy Warhol one, which I will probably never end up drinking because it's so pretty!

mason shaker | My mason shaker was a birthday gift from my lovely best friend a few years back. It makes the perfect bar accessory for when you want to mix up a great cocktail, and will be sure to impress your guests! The Mason Shaker company also has a cocktail mixing book, shake, that I often peruse every time I pass by it at Anthropologie. If you're not quite ready to commit to buying the book, I recommend following The Mason Shaker on Instagram for a peek at their uncommon cocktail recipes.

glasses | At the moment I am showcasing a few [rather large] wine glasses, but I can't wait to add some stemless wine glasses and whiskey glasses to my collection.

mixers | Admittedly, I am not a pop [soda] person. But, these carbonated blood orange flavored waters from San Pellegrino are as close as I'll get, and they are delicious. For reasons unknown to me, I just love the foil top and colorful packaging.

decor | Add a fun stack of books, a framed picture, and something unexpected. I took a page out of Carly Heitlinger of The College Prepster's book by showcasing a pair of fun heels. I'm sure the bottom two shelves will change often, as I rearrange books and decorative items in my apartment regularly!

colorful cocktail napkins | Uber feminine and chic, these cocktail napkins are the perfect addition to help clean up spills or hold apps.

straws | Who doesn't love a colorful paper straw?! The red stripes and pink hearts keep with my Valentine's Day theme, but these always remind me of summer days and sugary cocktails with friends. The pink heart straws are a great deal in the Dollar Spot at Target!

tray | This little number was a hand-me-down within my family, which makes it very special to me. I love the vintage feel and the intricate handles it has, making it perfect for corralling bottles in one place.

No matter your Valentine's Day plans, the one you spend it with will surely be impressed if you add some love-themed accents to your at home bar set up.

I can't even wait to style my new bar according to each holiday and occasion. I am picturing a margarita bar on Cinco De Mayo, a coffee bar for a brunch party, and something extra festive for Christmas. Eek! The possibilities are endless.

We all know that I have a slight huge obsession with BaubleBar. Recently, I purchased an item from them that I want to yell about from the rooftops - the acrylic block monogram necklace. It is the most perfect, dainty piece of monogrammed jewelry that I own.

what's in my bag[s]

Because who doesn't love a good peep through someone else's handbag?!

Tory Burch Robinson Middy Satchel [similar]| My heart flutters just thinking about any Tory Burch item, so it's no surprise that I am obsessed with my TB satchel. It's my go-to handbag for many many reasons. For starters, it is basically a Mary Poppins bag because it fits just about everything except for a laptop, without feeling too large to carry [I've toted iPads, planners, and makeup bags in this petite-looking bag]. In addition, the cognac color goes with navy, grey, black, brown... basically any color I wear on a day-to-day basis. The bag also comes with a removable shoulder strap, in addition to the shorter arm straps, which is perfect for when I want to carry my bag hands-free. The quality of this bag is outstanding, and I know I will love it for years and years to come. I could name a million more reasons why I love this structured & polished bag, but I'll spare you. [wink!]

Kimchi Blue wallet from Urban Outfitters [old] | This wallet is an oldie but a goodie. I'm probably due for a new one, but I just love the subtle grey color, laser cut detail, and tiffany-blue lining on the inside.

Ray Ban Tortoise Wayfarers | These shades are perfect for summer or winter, and add just the right amount of chic mystery to outfits. I may be biased due to my love for anything tortoise.

Vaseline | Let's be real... who doesn't slather this stuff on all winter?! Although, I recently read an article about how harmful it can be and my world came crashing down! I'm not sure I believe all the hoopla, because clearly I'm still using it on the daily.

Vera Bradley mini pouch [old] | This colorful mini pouch was a gift from my boyfriend's mom a few years back. I love the pop of color it adds to my handbag items and it fits all my gift cards perfectly.

Revlon lipstick in Sassy Mauve | The perfect wintery, subtle mauve color for when you need a pop of color in your life or on your lips.

Benefit Dr. Feelgood balm | I don't know about you guys, but when I leave work at the end of the day I don't always look as fresh as I did when I came in. If I'm on my way to dinner or drinks with friends, I make sure to pat on a little bit of this stuff. Why, you ask? It is a facial balm that helps to control oil and smooth out imperfections for when you need to freshen up in a pinch.

Orbit Sweet Mint gum | The best. I hate mint flavored gum that is so minty it makes your nose and tongue hurt, hence why I always choose this mild sweet mint flavor.

Vera Bradley makeup bag | Vera Bradley introduced a new line of leather and faux leather goods, and I am all for the subtle and sophisticated patterns and shapes. This tiny makeup bag is perfect for organizing those little must-have emergency items in your handbag, such as a mini hairbrush, chapstick, gum, pens, and other bits. I'm a big supporter of bags within bags [#baglady], so that the smaller items aren't rattling around.

J.Crew mittens [old] | For those I-have-no-idea-what-the-weather-is-going-to-be-like-because-I-live-in-western-PA days. I don't mind that these mittens aren't tech-friendly, because they provide warmth and style to any ensemble. I love the marled look because it adds a bit of texture to an otherwise monochromatic winter outfit.

my [last] january ipsy review

bag | Once again, I am feeling "meh" about the bag. It isn't as awful as last month's, but surely didn't blow my socks off. One side is white, one side is a royal blue, which are two colors I like, however the size and the fabric make this something that I won't use often.

Liquid eyeliner by Coastal Scents | Aside from the fact that I can't do a winged liner look to save my life, this product seems it be a good one. It has a sturdy felt tip brush and is jet black [two things I would probably look for if I could maneuver liquid liner]. Plus, the full size is very affordable at a mere $2.95!

Take it off! exfoliating honey peel off mask by Hey Honey | Is it just me, or is there something weirdly satisfying about a peel off mask? I'm not exactly sure where the "exfoliating" part of this product comes in, due to it's gooey texture, but I know that it removed the grime from my skin. This may be TMI, but I could actually see the dirt on the mask pieces I pulled off.

Be Good. Good Day. Day Moisturizer. by La Fresh Eco-Beauty | First of all, the name of this product is questionable. "Be good. Good day. Day Moisturizer." They could have stopped at day moisturizer and gotten the point across. Anyway, I digress. I'm starting to love this day time moisturizer. It is definitely not heavy enough to use at night, but it sits well under makeup during the day due to its lightweight formula and fresh cucumber scent.

Natural mineral coconut eye shadow by Pacifica in Ethereal | I need another nude eye shadow like I need another pair of shoes [I don't], but this product is lovely! The formula is very buttery and smooth, and it doesn't hurt that it's 100% vegan. This brand is available at Target, and I've also heard wonderful things about their blood orange lotion.

Velvet rose lipgloss by Velvet 59 in noisette | I was pleasantly surprised when I tried this gloss and loved it, seeing as I'm not a huge lip gloss gal. Lately I am super into rosy mauve colors, and this product has just the right amount of tint to it. Did I mention that I adore the chic clear packaging, silver handle, and faint rose scent? I've been layering this gloss over Revlon's Sassy Mauve, and it works like a dream.

I'm sure you've noticed a trend of me not being super excited with my Ipsy bags the past few months, which is why I have decided to cancel my subscription and receive the Sample Society box by Allure [only $15 a month!]. For only $10 a month, I still think Ipsy is a good deal for beauty lovers, but, I felt like a lot of the products weren't useful to me. I think Ipsy tries to avoid this by making subscribers take a beauty quiz, allowing you to choose the items and brands that you use most, but I still wasn't receiving the type of items I requested.

After spending far too much time researching past Sample Society boxes with my best friend via phone, I concluded that the $5 extra a month is worth it to receive samples of higher end brands that I might not normally buy. According to the site, the Allure beauty editor's choose their favorite beauty products for the month, and each subscriber gets the same box [although the colors of items may differ]. Keep a look out for my February Sample Society review next month! I can't wait to share it with you.

yes way rosé

Weekends are the perfect time to try something new with old friends. I knew I was going to meet a few friends for drinks on Friday night with no real destination in mind. After a recommendation from my best friend, I suggested Casbah, simply because I heard they have wine flights.

Casbah is a Mediterranean restaurant and wine bar located on S. Highland Ave, right in between Shadyside and East Liberty in Pittsburgh. A couple friends and I sat in the downstairs dining room, complete with a view of the wine cellar. We decided to only order a few flights of wine and one appetizer after realizing that the menu was prettyyy pricey. My friend and I split the bruschetta - a lovely combination of butternut squash ricotta, pomegranate, currents, and hazelnuts on grilled sourdough. It certainly wasn't your typical bruschetta but I thought the flavor combination was delicious. [Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of it!]

Okay, now on to the important part - the wine.

After feeling slightly disappointed that they were out of the "Bouquet of Rosé" flight [as advertised on their website], I chose to order the "Sparkler" flight - a medley of brut champagne, rosé and prosecco [$12]. This combo did not disappoint and also made me feel super fancy [insert girl-with-hand-out emoji here]. I liked the rosé so much that I decided to order the full glass once we were done with our flights.

If you're going out for a special occasion, or you're just in the mood to feel fancy, I would recommend going to Casbah to try a wine flight or two. I think next time I'll try lunch... That menu's prices seem a bit more reasonable.

Oh, did I mention that Yes Way Rosé liked my Insta from Friday night?! Day. Made.

recent [style] resolutions

In full disclosure, New Year's resolutions just aren't my thing. I think a year should only measure finances & the length of friendships - not the number of times you plan to go to the gym or the start of a "new you." If you want to do something - do it. You don't need a calendar date to determine the start of personal goals.

That being said, I am always looking for new ways to improve upon my personal style and love the pieces again that I become sick of. Far from New Year's resolutions, these are style resolutions that I have been working on recently, in an effort to refresh my personal style and appreciate the items I have.

Mix & match the crrrrap out of my wardrobe | In an effort to be more Glitter & Gingham-esque, I am challenging myself to mix and match patterns and colors that aren't my usual go-to. Of course it's great to have a classic "go-to" look, but I also love discovering new and exciting style combos. Plaid & leopard? Black & navy? All of the above, please.

Wear more lipstick | I alluded to this in my last blog post, but I am making a serious attempt at incorporating a colorful lip into my looks. I must admit, wearing lipstick makes me feel polished, put-together, and feminine. Plus, it's easy and inexpensive to change up your makeup look with lipstick.

Use what I have | Instead of always going out to buy the latest item of makeup or a new dress for an occasion, I am making a conscious effort to take a new perspective on items that I already own, whether it be in home accessories, makeup, or clothing. It's amazing what a quick search on Pinterest, a new pairing, and some rearranging can do. And remember: inspiration is often free [a trip to Nordstrom rarely comes with a small pricetag]. As far as makeup goes, I'm realizing I need to first use up what I have, because having less stuff just makes me feel lighter and good.

Of course these non-New Year resolutions aren't as serious as someone who wants change the world or hit the gym five days a week, they're just a few fun fashion goals I've been working on. So expect to see lots of pattern play, lipstick, and new takes on old items in upcoming style posts.

little luxuries under $20

We all know by now that "#treatyourself" is a phrase that just rolls off the tongue for me. However, I believe that treating yourself should should not mean going broke. To me, treating yourself doesn't mean buying a $300 purse if you really can't afford it. Treating yourself can be easy, affordable, and gratifying. I've compiled a list of items that I don't buy too frequently, but I know these little luxuries make me feel pretty darn great when I do purchase them.

Harney & Sons Winter White Earl Grey Tea | $7.99 | This tea literally might have pieces of heaven in it. The flavor is unlike any earl grey tea I've had before. It has an almost Fruit Loop-like scent to it. Plus, the vintage-looking tin packaging can totally be re-purposed once you've used all the tea bags (which might be pretty quickly, they are that good). I use my tin as a pencil holder!

Anthropologie mugs | $10-20 | You know what's better than luxury tea? A beautiful mug to drink it out of. If you want to take things to the next level, I encourage drinking luxury tea (or coffee) out of a beautiful mug, in bed. Glorious.

MAC lipstick | $16 | There is just something about buying a good lipstick. MAC's lipsticks are truly a beauty staple and they feel so luxurious. I love the sleek packaging and variety of colors. The shade I'm eyeing up right now is called "syrup," a your-lips-but-better mauve color.

Klorane dry shampoo | $19.79 | I received this dry shampoo in a Birchbox a long time ago, but to this day I still think it is the best dry shampoo out there. It actually gets rid of oily roots rather than just making them look less oily, which leaves you time to do things you want to do -- like brunch on a Saturday morning (sans oily hair).

anatomy of a bedside table

I'm going to go so far as to say that styling my new apartment is almost as important as styling my outfits each day. I find that a cozy, styled home is a happy home, but it's the tiniest details that really count. With that, I give you the anatomy of a bedside table.

lamp | I think this item needs little explanation. For those times when you can't put down your favorite book (or catalogue) or when you just want to find your chapstick in the middle of the night. Plus, I believe you can never have too much light in a room.

hand cream | Is it just me, or is it a great feeling to slather on the hand cream right before bedtime? Dream Cream is from Lush, and it is super moisturizing and natural smelling. Did you think I could go one blog post without mentioning Lush?!

techy stuff | I love a quick bout on Pinterest before bedtime, hence why my iPad has a prime spot on my bedside table.

most used scents | Some may prefer to have their perfumes on display on a dresser or in their bathroom, but I prefer to have them right next to my bed. The bottles provide a nice visual appeal and the scent seems to linger around my bed after I do a few sprays. Maybe it's weird, but I love when my comforter smells like my signature scent!

trinket tray | One of the most underrated home accessories of all time, the catch-all trinket tray. I love having one of these at my bedside for bobby pins, earrings, and small perfume bottles. I also don't mind the pop of color this one gives.

candles | I am a total candle lover. I find that they provide a sense of relaxation and warmth in any home. I like to light my bedside candle on a lazy Saturday morning or a half hour before I fall asleep.

light reading | At any given moment, you will find a small stack of catalogues on my bedside table. When I'm sick of the internet and need some fashion inspo, I turn to some favorites - J.Crew, Land's End, Anthropologie. The list goes on and on.

any other goodies that make you smile | I decided to accessorize a bit further with the metal "G" from Restoration Hardware, which is so heavy it doubles as a paper weight. I also added a macaron trinket case, a gift from my friend Courtney (below the word "used" in the photo).

I think bedside styling is pretty important for everyday convenience and visual appeal. So choose the items that you use regularly, or that just make you happy.

december ipsy review

Hi all! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful holiday. It's that time again... December Ipsy glam bag review!

bag | When I signed up for Ipsy, I thought I would love getting a small little makeup bag every month. Now, I am 4 months in and haven't really loved any of the actual bags! The only word to describe this bag is chintzy. Into the trash it will go soon! Sorry Ipsy.

Beauty Without Cruelty alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) facial cleanser | At first I thought this product would be a mediocre, run of the mill facial cleanser. I was wrong. Beauty Without Cruelty is a very misleading brand name -- because this facial cleanser did a cruel little number on my face. I'm not exactly sure if it was the AHAs in this wash that made my skin red, tight, and broken out for a solid 4 days, but I know it was not pleasant. This product will be going in the trash soon. I would not recommend it to anyone! (I swear, some of the products were actually good this month.)

Crown shadow/crease duet brush | This brush is just okay. It does the job, but I wasn't blown away by it. It is weird that it's double-ended, which doesn't allow you to stand it upright in a brush holder.

NYX Butter lip balm in red velvet | I've been wanting to try any NYX product, so I was pleased to see this in my Ipsy bag. It truly has a buttery formula, and the color tint is beautiful and easy to apply. It's lighter than a lipstick but still provides noticeable color. Did I mention that it smells like strawberry candy? I am a huge fan of it and will likely try other colors.

Pixi Fairy Dust in brightening bare | I've seen the Pixi line in Target before, but never tried any of their products. This loose powder eye shadow is a pretty nude color with a light shimmer. Would I repurchase it for $10? Probably not. But, it's a nice neutral shadow that can be used for a low-key look.

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara | This product made this month's bag worth it! I've heard great things about Tarte mascaras... and let me tell you, the hype is real. I love the length this gives to my lashes. I would definitely consider purchasing a full-sized version of this product. My one qualm is that the mascara adds so much length to the lashes that they touch my eyelids and therefore the product sometimes transfers onto my lids. Because of this, I think I would probably purchase the waterproof version called Lights, Camera, Splashes. Side note: How cute are the names of their mascaras?!

Bare Minerals Flawless Definition Volumizing mascara | I know what you're thinking. Each bag usually only contains five items, why six this month?! Well, Ipsy forgot to send the Pixi Fairy Dust in my bag, so I emailed IpsyCare to make them aware. This was the second time in 4 months that they had forgotten to put an item in my bag. So, they sent me an extra item to make up for it. It was a nice gesture... But the mascara was dried out. I gave it a try anyway, and found that the brush/formula provides more volume than length. If volume is your thing, this product might be the one for you.

Overall, I only really liked the NYX balm and the Tarte mascara from December. I'm going to see how January's bag pans out, then re-evaluate my Ipsy subscription.

Spa-in-a-jar | Throw some lotion, a small candle, cozy socks, a bath bomb, and chapstick into a mason jar, and tie it with some burlap. Most women love beauty items, and this make-it-yourself gift set can be super inexpensive. I borrowed this idea from one of my favorite vloggers - Ingrid Nilsen. Check out her DIY gifts video!

Lush goodies | If you don't want to go all-out with the spa in a jar, you can easily grab one luxurious item from Lush. No matter your price point, Lush is sure to have something for everyone - even men. I particularly love the bath bombs and lip scrubs - both under $10.

Pajamas | I think these ones from Target are adorably classic, and perfect for snuggling up with a mug of cocoa.

Wine | Who doesn't love a nice bottle of vino? For around $10, you can get a pretty nice bottle of wine for someone who entertains, or simply enjoys a beverage with dinner.

confessions of a lushie: part III

Surprise, surprise... I'm reviewing two more Lush products, perfect for holiday gift-giving!

Sparkler bath bomb | This rose-jam scented bath bomb is a nice little treat at the end of a busy week, with a smell that is so comforting and relaxing. In an effort to preserve this goody for more than one use, I broke the "stick" in half. The bomb has a sparkly center, which adds a bit of glimmer to your bath (that also sticks to your tub once the water is drained - which I personally don't mind). I felt quite relaxed, moisturized, and sweet smelling after soaking in the tub with this bomb. Even if you don't take baths often, I would recommend buying this product simply for the scent. I honestly steal a whiff of it a couple times a week.

Right now it's sold out online, but you may be able to find it at your local Lush store. It's also included in this luxurious gift set! I think Lush's bath bombs make the perfect holiday gift for a friend, for under $10.

BB Seawood fresh face mask | Once you get past the odd texture of this mask, you might just love it. This product was recommended to me after I found out the Catastrophe Cosmetic mask was sold out. The scent of the BB Seaweed mask reminds me of the beach - fresh and slightly salty. With calming and exfoliating properties, my skin feels smooth and refreshed after one use. The only downside is that the seaweed is slightly weird - there are substantial pieces that are sometimes difficult to wash off once the mask dries. But, I can get past the seaweed because this product truly lives up to its claims.

hats off to Old Navy!

Just popping in to share one of favorite deals of the season. I stopped into Old Navy one night looking for a flannel, and ended up leaving with a cute little hat that cost less than lunch (only $5)! This hat is quite flattering and a style that is really popular lately. I'm happy I didn't have to spend a fortune to try out this trend.

Unfortunately, I can't find the exact hat on the ON website (I think I just got lucky finding it in the store's sale section). But, I did find a similar one from Target - complete with a bow!

keep calm

"Give me all the chamomile!" is almost a daily thought for me lately. I have found two great products that I love, both of which include chamomile, a magic ingredient.

The silky cleansing oil from The Body Shop was a gift from my equally-makeup-obsessed best friend. I was so excited to try this, but I didn't know what to expect - putting oil directly on your face sounded like a breakout waiting to happen. Fast forward a few weeks, and it has seriously worked wonders for my complexion. The combination of oil and chamomile makes skin silky smooth and calms redness. I actually look forward to removing my makeup with this every night, followed by my regular face cleanser or a face mask. I would definitely consider this a must-have beauty product. I only wish it came in perfume form! The smell is so light and comforting.

My second favorite chamomile product is the chamomile vanilla tea by Bigelow. I've been a huge tea person lately. This tea is slightly sweet and very soothing. In addition, drinking chamomile tea has immense health benefits. It can help relax muscles, improve skin tone, and even help fight off colds - just to name a few. Did I mention it tastes delicious too?

With the holidays in full force, I think we all need a few fool-proof ways to stay calm.

I don't think I can explain my excitement when Marley Lilly sent me a beautiful monogrammed scarf in the mail last week! I am a sucker for all things plaid in the winter months, and a sucker for monograms in all months. This scarf fit the bill perfectly!

pearl front & back earrings

I've said it once, I'll say it again: LOFT is on. point. this year. I can tell that LOFT is changing in order to appeal to a younger demographic, and I love it. They have been coming out with affordable versions of what is "in," while also carrying basic pieces that are a girl's go-tos. The other night I stopped in at LOFT to look at the new merchandise, when I stumbled upon earrings that I have been lusting over for awhile now.

Dior makes pearl 360 earrings that are 3 bajillion dollars, probably (a very accurate price). BaubleBar came out with a very similar pair for $28. One of my favorite bloggers wears them often, and I just love the way they look on her. I debated buying the BaubleBar version, but never got around to doing so because I thought they might look odd on me and I couldn't justify the price if I wasn't positive about them. Along comes LOFT. They have come out with their own rendition of the tribal pearl earring - the pearlized front-back stud earrings. With my employee discount (I work there one day a week), they ended up being about $10 (regularly $19.50). LOFT has 40% off sales pretty frequently, so you can definitely score them at a discount.

[Another reason to #loveloft.]

I wore them Friday night and realized that I was so glad I ended up purchasing them! They add a little edgy glamour to any outfit. Normally I'm not one for trends, but if it involves pearls, I can get behind it. These would be a great holiday gift for a friend as well.

Moral of the story - you can find a less expensive version of items you have been coveting. Lately, a lot of retailers are replicating what high-end brands are doing. It just takes some searching.

november ipsy

It's mid-November, so you know what that means... Ipsy glam bag review time!

makeup bag | by Forever 21 for Ipsy. Not the best, not the worst. I think I had this same makeup bag when I was in my LTD2 days. I will probably give this away to someone.

SeaRx Birchsap Moisturizing Lotion | I'm all for a good face moisturizer, so I was excited to test this one out. The sample is pretty small, but I have enjoyed using it. The lotion has a strong citrus smell to it, almost like clementines, which I love. The formula is very lightweight, and absorbs quickly. Is it a life changer? No. Is it nice to use? Yes.

Marc Anthony Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Hairspray | This product was one of the items that made this bag totally worth it. Argan oil seems to be very popular in haircare lately, and I've been dying to try something containing it. This hairspray is not sticky at all, and provides great volume and shine to my flat and dull hair. It also smells great, and doesn't tangle my hair like other hairsprays do. Win-win-win.

J.Cat Wonder Lip Paint | To be honest, this product confuses me. It claims to be a "lip paint," which I assumed meant it would perform like a lip stain. However, the formula of this lip product is very runny, more so than a gloss (swatched below). The liquidity of the product makes it difficult to apply straight from the tube, so I would recommend using a q-tip. It is very pigmented and does stain your lips, but wears like a gloss. I'm not the biggest fan, but I know I won't love everything each month. It was still fun to try this!

Starlooks Eyeliner pencil in ultra olive | As I told you in my first Ipsy review, I'm not a huge eyeliner gal. I don't wear it on a day-to-day basis because I think it makes my eyes look way smaller than they already are. However, I might give this one a try on a special occasion. I think this product might be nice because I can blend it up from my lash line and use it like a cream eyeshadow, rather than simply drawing a straight line across my lid. The color is beautiful (swatched below), and I think will complement my green eyes.

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye Concealer | I saved the best for last! This under eye concealer is highly coveted in the beauty world, so I was quite happy to receive a sample. It really does what it says - conceals under eye bags, moisturizes, and even covers discoloration and acne. It is very thick, but I apply it with a Beauty Blender and it blends into my skin just fine. A little bit does go a long way. Also, this sample size will be nice to have in a bag for traveling.

This Ipsy glam bag was not too shabby! I loved that it had an array of different product types - hair, skin, and makeup. I have been using almost all of the products daily (except for the eyeliner and lip paint). the opposite of loneliness

Sometimes you find a book that is so intriguing and relatable, you cannot put it down. Recently, that book for me was the Opposite of Loneliness. After reading about this book on The College Prepster, I knew I had to dive into it. For someone who isn't a daily book reader, I finished this book in about five days - that says something.

The Opposite of Loneliness is a compilation of essays written in college by 22-year-old Marina Keegan. A few short days after Marina's graduation from Yale, with an extremely bright future ahead, she was killed in a tragic car accident. After her passing, Marina's professor decided to compile both her fictional and non-fictional essays into a book. It is eery how much foreshadowing I saw in Marina's writing. Her writing style is beautiful and so very appropriate for her age, but gives insight similar to that of someone who is old and wise. The preface of the novel, written by Marina's professor, will probably make you cry - as it made me - but in the best way possible. I don't want to give too much away, but I truly think this is the perfect read for someone in the age group of 18-30. It perfectly outlines those unsure feelings you feel at that in-between adulthood and childhood age, and the story behind it is so touching.

I am very tempted to re-read this book, because it truly does capture the roller coaster of emotions we all can experience at the brink of becoming an adult.

Sidenote: This was my first book that I read on any sort of digital device... Still not sure how I feel about it. I love a good hard copy of a book, but I also like minimal clutter. First world problems.

my tips for a happier closet

I'm a huge believer that half the battle of getting dressed lies in how well you organize your clothes. I must admit, after following these simple tips I have found myself saying "I have nothing to wear," a lot less and my closet is much happier.

1] Hang all shirts on the same type of hanger. This small tip has been a game changer for me. This summer, I decided to ditch any hanger that wasn't a thin huggable hanger. It makes me closet look much more neat, and because these hangers are so thin, my closet can also fit more items! Win-win. In addition, I decided to hang all my blazers on wooden hangers. This gives heavier items more structure, and again, keeps my closet more uniform.

2] Don't buy something simply because it is on sale. Buy an item because you love it, it fits well, and you know you will wear it time and time again. Otherwise, that item that seemed like a good deal is just taking up valuable space in your closet. Some of the time, sale items stand out in the store simply because of the low price tag, but end up being an item that is forgotten about once it's in your closet. In the end, you are not saving money if you never wear the item. Instead, put your money towards an investment item that will last you years to come.

3] Always fold your heavy sweaters. If sweaters are hung, their weight tends to stretch the sweater downward. I always fold my heavier sweaters so that they keep their shape and refrain from stretching.

4] Use an old bookshelf to display your shoes. There is no need to buy an expensive shoe rack when an old or inexpensive bookshelf works just as well! When I can see all my shoes at one time, I feel a lot less overwhelmed. I can quickly scan the shelf, grab my shoes, and be out the door.

5] Be brutally honest with yourself when you purge your items. Every season, I try to go through my closet and donate items that I no longer wear or need. If something has a hole in it, an unremovable stain, or simply doesn't fit the way it used to - pitch it or donate it. This frees up space for something new and exciting in your closet!
